A nice implementation of 3d interface for a mobile device by tracking you eye. This could be a very good use of the front camera, which you can find on most mobile these days. When you are not using it to video conference it could be doing eye tracking to make the interface look like its 3d.
Something similar is being done on the iphone by a free game called labyrinth. They are using the accelerometer to know when you are tilting the phone and adjust the image in the game to look like its 3d. Looks really good hope many more such implementations are developed.
You have to try the game to really see the 3d table effect. Hope the above pictures give you an idea.
They have started the 3G service and will have it available for consumers from April 20. Here are something you need to know about the service.
They claim they can provide speeds up to 2mbps, but if you can get anything more than 512 kbps would be great.
You will need to get a new Sim, at the moment or during the launch they don’t have number portability. So you will need to get a new number too. They are planning to sell data cards and usb modems in near future.
They have a detailed list of prices for the service. But the thing you will need is unlimited data plan which they are asking 3000 Rs per month for just data plan. Which is quite a bit costly, that will go down as the competitors launch their 3G services too.
I am willing to pay up to 2000 Rs for unlimited data at 512 kbps lets see who can provide this.
Oh by the way you will also need to buy a new phone that is capable of doing 3G.
Unless you were under a rock, you would have heard everything about Steve’s health issues and his 6 month medical leave etc.
But the real question is…
Is Steve Jobs that important to Apple.
For all the reports i have seen of the few days about his replacement it looks like Tim cook is the one who’s really making all of it work and Steve was a just a good show man.
Most of the design is done by Jonathan Ive, video of him talking about the aluminum mac book was anything to go by he looks like the only guy who could design such stuff with out any input from others.
Then the question is what is Steve’s roll in all this. Is he there to make sure no buttons are put on it or to make sure you don’t get cut and paste, Or make it a carrier locked phone etc. And i could go on and on.
Because if you think of it all these things don’t make any business sense. If it was up to Tim Cook he would have gone with iphone as a open device and not locked to one carrier. It makes a lot of business sense to do that. They could have sold twice as many as now. Can you imagine an ipod that could play only one music labels songs.
So could Steve Jobs leaving apple improve it from where it is right now?
I think so, Music industry will be more than willing to make deals with Apple without Steve Jobs, same goes for movie industry or any other partners for that matter.
I am not saying Steve Jobs doesn’t bring anything to the table, but for what he does bring there is far more baggage attached with it.
The one complaint everybody had about App store was that they would not allow third party apps that compete with its own apps.
But that changed today because they have allowed other web browser apps on to the app store. So how long will it take for Microsoft, Opera and Firefox to come to the app store.
Hope quite soon, this would encourage apple to innovate on their own apps which have not seen any major changes through all the 11 firmware updates that it has put out for iPhone.
The image on the right is of the new app called edge browser. which is a free app that will allow you to see one site in full screen no address bars or navigation. I have put my mobile rss page for quick access. You to can use this page by going to www.prasanthblog.com/iphone/ (its a page with rss feeds of major sites formatted into iphone format)
The whole UI is based in html css and java. So it will be easier for developers to make programs. And from the demo it looks as easy and fun to use as an iphone.
As promised Palm have delivered a beautiful device with even more beautiful operating system and ui. I am impressed, if they price it reasonably I would be willing to give it a try. Watch the Palm Pre UI demo videos from CES 2009.
iPhone’s killer features are it’s first party app’s and not the third party app’s.
Most competitors forget that iPhone comes with some very special app’s out of the box. App’s like Calendar, iPod, Browser, SMS, Stock, Weather, Maps, Youtube etc. Most would agree that they don’t have all the features. But you really would be hard pressed to find any app’s that do these things better. I know apple doesn’t allow some of the app’s that compete with their first party app’s. But it really would be hard to better those app’s. If you do a survey of the people using iPhone you would definitely find the first party app’s leading the way.
These first party app’s are so powerful that, you could do most of things all the app’s in the app store would do. Other than the gaming part everything else can be done on iPhone without any app’s.
So the real success of the iPhone is it’s app’s out of the box. It’s really surprising why they have not added any new app’s. Video recording (cycoder jail broken app has proven that it can be done as beautifully as the camera app) Todo list, Photoshop like program etc, would be good additions. But what they provide is spectacular when you compare it with it’s competitors.
For example G1 (Google phone) doesn’t even come with a music player and you expect that to compete with iPhone.
The same thing can be said of other competitors like Nokia, Microsoft, Htc etc.
If apple keeps adding to the first party app’s on feature updates, it will be impossible for the competition to even compete.
If I had a Nokia mobile I would have definitely tried this site out.
It let you sync address book, calendar and other content online to a website called ovi. I don’t know if it does over the air, but there is a software similar to Nokia PC suite that you can download and do it via the PC. The content that you can sync mostly depends on the features your phone has. Once you sign in for a free account you can choose which Nokia mobile model you have and sync it.
As far as I can tell, its a free service, unlike apple’s mobile me service. So go ahead and give it a try. I wish someone comes up with some thing like this for an iPhone that’s free.
I am not sure if this is a new feature or not. But this is the first time I have noticed it.
If you look in the clock app of the iphone in the timer feature, if you select the option to set the ring tone now there is a option to put to "sleep ipod".
Which means you stop the music after a certain time. This is a cool feature I was searching for in other app’s. Once you set timer the music is stopped without any warnings or beeps.
Now I can put the iphone on 15 min timer and sleep. After 15 min the iphone timer will stop the music and I can dream on.
I didn’t see this feature mentioned any where else that is the reason for writing this post.
Here are the links you will need to get things going.
First the iphone dev team have with in a day after the official release of the iphone firmware have released a software to jailbreak and unlock the iphone.
Using itunes restore you iphone. Select the shift key on your keyboard and click the restore button in itunes. And itunes will ask you to select the firmware. Select the firmware you just downloaded and it will do the rest.
Once iphone reboots it will be updated but locked, to unlock and jail brake read on.
Run quickpwn it will ask for the firmware, point to it and then it will ask you what installer you want to use and also give you the unlock option.
I found this free app called cooliris. Which lets you browse Google images site in a really cool way. You can put a search term and do a search and it will bring you only the pictures in a beautiful way with all the iphone touch controls like pinch and flick to see next image.
But once you find a nice image you can only email it. You can’t set it as a wallpaper. So here is a simple trick to make this app really useful. Once you find the picture you want, tap it once and it will show a small preview, tap it once more and it will fill the iphone screen. Once it does just take a screenshot by pressing iphone home button and power button at once.
Now just go to your photos on iphone and you will find the photo that you searched for there and you can set as a wall paper, email or even blog it from there.
Very nice app, and what’s the first things I search for girls of course.
Oh by the way it can also search flickr, smugmug, devianart, yahoo etc.
