Things to do before you buy an iphone

If you are going to buy an iphone read this before you do. This will help you use your iphone to the fullest.

First of all get GPRS activated on your Sim card. Iphone has a super browser and almost all the things on iphone need GPRS. Like the stock, weather etc. Also try to get the unlimited package because you will be using it a lot.

If you have a computer then try to find a way to sync your contacts etc with outlook. Once you get iphone it will sync all the details available in outlook to your iphone.

You can sync your mobile contacts with outlook and also save them on google in multiple ways do it with plaxo, funambol or even with ScheduleWorld and get ready.

Download itunes and put all your music on it and organise it the way you like. Don’t for get to put album covers. Since most of the songs from india don’t have way to get album covers in itunes you can add them manually. By cliking on each song and selecting get info then just drag the picture you want as your ablum cover into the artwork window and click okay and itunes save that photo as your mp3 files art work or album cover.

If you do this when you browse the mp3 on iphone with coverflow it will look cool.and will be helpful in getting to the song you want quickly.

Also convert all your videos into mp4 format because iphone only plays mp4 format. There are plenty of software that do free video conversion to mp4.

If you get all these things in place you will have an easy transistion to iphone.

I am using an unlocked iphone with Airtel in India..Can u pls tell me how to
configure the GPRS Settings in the iphone.. Also pls tell whether i can install
Installer 3.0b8 (AppTapp Installer) in the iphone.

Since you have to send sms to get gprs settings for airtel i have no idea.

i have a bsnl so its easy. Try asking the support center.

About installing apps on the iphone, if its already jail broken you can install the app
installer. Its quite safe, unless you restore or update your firmware.

i have apps installed on my iphone the firmware for my iphone is 1.0.2
some of the latest ones like the 1.1.2 don’t have installers yet. So check
your firmware before trying.

I filled this edge settings in my hacked 1.0.2 iphone, but safari say that are no connection. I have a airtel postpaid card from Mumbai. I´m sure that there must some vpn configuration, please can You help me? Sorry about my bad english but I´m a German.

These are the airtel settings for iphone.

Settings -> General -> Network -> EDGE
APN = airtelgprs.com
leave username & password blank

i don’t think you need vpn stuff

also remember if the edge network is down it will take a day or two for them
to fix it, So keep trying. And see if anyone else is able to use edge in the area
you are using.

My company says edge is activatet, but it wasn´t, I activated it via sms and i got feedback form airtel after 3 hours, that I should wrote an sms mo to 2567 to receive the settings, and the same shall be received within 10 minutes once the same is activated. But still I am nothing received and there is not a edge symbol on the screen of the Iphone, maybe it will take 48 Hours to activate GPRS?

That could be the reason. May be edge is not yet activated. As you said if you see the E symbol on the main screen of your iphone it means Edge has been activated.

It could take a day or two for edge to get activated.

the gprs settings for iphone in gujarat are

in the iphone go to the

setting
general
network
edge

and in access point put “gprswest.cellone.in”
and in the username “your mobile number”
and in the password “your mobile number”

if all the things go well you should see a small symbol “E” on the main display.

which means edge or gprs is working.

Hi, I am using the iphone with airtel…just got GPRS activated. wanted to know once i am done using gprs i go back to the home screen of the iphone. A E symbol still shows active on top of the screen. is there a way to close the E symbol….if at all required.

As far as I know there is no way do that. Even if you remove edge settings the E symbol will be displayed. If you can install app’s on your iPhone try the app called services. It will allow you to turns Edge, wifi etc off. But even then the symbol will be shown. And this program doesn’t work in 1.1.3 yet. Just by displaying that symbol you will not be charged for GPRS. But I recommend you to get unlimited GPRS account which costs 200 Rs per month on bsnl. You can’t fully use the iPhone without unlimited GPRS access.

If you are worried about using GPRS while on roaming their is an option to turns off GPRS automatically in 1.1.3. Look in setting-general-network for the options.

Here are the settings for iphone, i don’t know what the mtnl access point is.
The password and user name usually are your mobile number.

Access Point Name bsnlsouth

Go to this page and look for GPRS settings for different handsets

Its a excel file with all the gprs settings. its a 2mb file.

It will cost you 20 Rs per mb if you pay by usuage or
450 per month if you use it unlimited. Remember wap and internet are not the same thing.

Wap is useful for mobile site you need internet to use regular sites.

Try these settings or look in the excel file.

apn : imis
username : blank
password : blank

You have to activate the gprs on your mobile device before these settings will work.

Try the settings in the excel file that i gave the link for.

Try different settings. Try and use the pda settings.

Also find out if internet is activated and not just wap.

Also check your iphone home screen to see if you have an E symbol
next to the signal symbol.

I have unlocked iphone and I am on Airtel Madhya Pradesh.
I have already activated net on phone from Airtel, my edge setting is APN = airtelgprs.com but I am still unable to get to the net, It keeps saying edge is not active.

I have no idea of airtel gprs settings even on their webpage its hard to find settings.

You only need Access point, username and password for the iphone to work with gprs.

You don’t need the other settings. Once you put the above mentioned stuff i phone will
start working. If everything is fine you should see a E symbol on your iphone home screen.

Some iphone versions that were jail broken like the 1.1.1 have some issue with saving the
settings so look into that too.

Any idea how to activate GPRS settings for Vodafone in Delhi ?
I read some where that normal GPRS (49 /- bugs per months plan ) will not work and I” will have to go for vodafone mobile connect service for 500 / – per month ? Please could you help me activate this on my iphone ?

Also, I am using Iphone v1.1.3 and iTunes 7.6 and I was able to customize my ringtones on my iphone using a simple hack Trick but is there some way I can customize ringtones for new message tone ?

Just ask the vodofone customer service for these settings.

APN or Access Point
Username – which usually will be your mobile phone
Password – which usually will be your mobile phone

Once these settings are given iphone should work, If not just switch off and restart
the phone, if it still doesn’t work then the problem is with the service or the settings.

Iphone only needs these three settings to work right. So after that if you are still having
problem it has to be because of vodafone.

About changing the new message tone. You can’t do it on an jail broken phone.

Since you are using iphone in India your iphone should already be unlocked and jail broken.
Otherwise iphone will not work in India.

Since you already have an jail broken iphone install the program called customize through
the installer app on your iphone. That app lets you change all kind of settings like the images
to carrier names and even tones which you asked for and many other settings.

Sorry to inform you this iphone has no mms capability. So there is no place to put those settings.

You can use email to send pictures and links of the sites you visit etc.

Just add an email account on your iphone and you can send pictures etc.

I am on Airtel postpaid plan and I’ve activated the GPRS. In my EDGE settings I’ve set the APN = airtelgprs.com and blank username and password. I could still not any website on safari as it say “Could not activate Edge: you are not subscribed to Edge”. The weird thing is that at the top, near the network symbol, I see only a white/blue box, but it does not show “E” written on it (symbol of EDGE).
Any help in this regard is appreciated.

There are so many things that could be problems so i will write all of them so please check.

1. is gprs working in your area, if its a remote place the gprs might not be working.
2. If you know anyone else in your area using gprs exchange his sim and see if you get the E
3. Also try and restart the iphone every time you change the settings sometimes they only work
after a restart.
4. If you just activated gprs it could take a day or two for the carrier to activate your gprs.

Hopefully one of the things will help you solve the problem

I see that the safari browser directly goes to the apple website as soon as it is launched. As it is an unlocked phone, will it cause a problem if it connects to the website? I have the 1.1.3 firmware. Also is there a way to change the homepage from apple to something else? Thanks for the help.

If anybody from Bangalore got the iphone working with GPRS in airtel, please let me know. I have tried, but with no success :(

There is no homepage option on iphone. When ever you go to a site and close safari.
it will remember that site and when you open safari again that site will load. If by any
chance if safari crashes and closes it will open and not load any site next time you
open safari.

There is no problem with going to apples site on unlocked phone. I go to apples
site very often. Even on itunes if you click update or restore itunes has to download
a big firmware file which is around 150 mb for you to get a firmware. So don’t worry of
having problems with your iphone.

I got it working :) . The data roaming switch was the problem. It just needed the APN entry and then a restart. So EDGE connection works with airtel in Bangalore.

Hi,
I just bought the iphone and i have an airtel connection. on the top left corner, i see airtel written and the E sign, so i guess edge is activated already. the thing is that every time i go to the phone option, it closes and the main menu appears again. I cant write messages nor dial numbers but, the same isnt happenin when the AT&T sim is put (which came with the phone)
is there something wrong with my phone or the connection?
Please help me out, Im begining to lose sleep.

its rather a query than a comment…:)i have GPRS activated on my phone…while activating they ask for ur phone model so that they will send the correct settings to ur phone..suppose if i switch to iphone do i have to call ans ask for the settings for my iphone or they will send u again automatically since GPRS is already activated for my number. Since iphone is not officially available in will the settings be available?

Those settings will not work you will have to find the settings on your own.

Just contact me once you get an iphone and i will tell you what the gprs settings are.
you didn’t mention which carrier you are using, i would have given them to you now itself.

You can also ask for the settings with the person who sells the iphone usually they know
these settings or you can contact me. Good luck i heard that they are selling iphone now
for around 21000 Rs in India in black market at least that was the price i heard in Bangalore.

i am using an unlocked jail broken i phone version 1.1.4 with airtel prepaid carrier in ranchi.i was accessing internet successfully till 4 days ago over my i phone using edge setting APN = airtelgprs.com.
The problem started 4 days ago when the Edge symbol disappeared from the set and internet is no more accessible(Safari says it can’t find the server).I contacted customer care and they confirm that GPRS is still active for my Sim.At present no web based service is functioning on my phone.please guide….

Gprs service could be down and it usually takes them three to four days to fix it.

Or

If you are a prepaid airtel user you will have to keep a certain amount of balance to use the
Gprs on your mobile. On bsnl i heard them say from 50 Rs to 200 Rs has to be there in balance
on your Sim for gprs to work. If you are a post paid customer the gprs service being down
is the only problem i can think of.

So keep trying for a few days or ask someone else who is using gprs and find out if its working.

also if you have a spare phone put the sim into that phone try and see if that works.

You need gprs connection and not wap, i think its called mobile office or something on airtel all you need is this setting.

On the iphone go to Settings – General – Network – Edge

and put the above setting leave the username and password as blank and it should work.

Only setting you need are

APN: gprsmtnldel
Username: mtnl
Password: mtnl123

On the iphone go to Settings – General – Network – Edge

Also make sure you have unlimited account because you will very easily use a lot and if you
are paying for bandwidth you will end up getting a big bill. It cost 20 Rs for 1 mb. So go unlimited.

I was thinking of getting an iPhone from US. I have a prepaid Airtel connection.
my question is this : will i get a service reply telling me of my current balance after a call / a message like on a regular phone?
Another thing, what if something happens to the iPhone? Re-virginize it and send it bacl to US? is there any way to get it repaired here in India?

I don’t think any carrier specific things will work on iphone. Like getting the current balance details etc. You can re-virginize and send it or you can take them to any number of local shops in india who will do the repair in India. But unless you activate your iphone in USA i don’t think you will get your warranty. So even if you send it back i don’t think you can get it fixed.

If you have airtel mobile service Edge should be available. It should be available because of their data cards and other services they offer which have to work anywhere airtel mobile service is available. If its not working at the moment it could be down for maintenance or something like that which usually could take some days to get fixed.

International mobile carriers are out of my league. Gprs activation can only be done
by you going and asking for it with your service provider. Hopefully you mobile provider
has a good gprs plan.

vodafone live. So activate vodafone live to get gprs activated on your mobile. Also check
the prices before using too much.

Iphone doesn’t support that function at the moment. iphone cannot act as a modem. May be in future they will add such a feature.

I have Spice Bangalore connection
Tried everything to get the GPRS to Work but it still isnt.
Even tried to add 2 files,
proxy.pac (proxy to 10.200.200.3) and
preferences.plist(just an edited file) saved in /private/var/root/…..
used ibrickr

The E icon has always been on since i put in the sim.
can u please tell me how i can change or revert back if i need to the original settings so as to get it to work

Just restore the firmware from itunes and you will get iphone back to its factory settings. Then use ziphone to unlock and jailbreak the iphone.

I am not sure what the settings for Spice are.

Since you say the screen disappers when you enter apn may be there is
a bug or some error.

If the apn is not saved it will not work. So try and get that fixed by restoring the
firmware. Do it only if you know how to do it and unlock it again afterwards.

Once you put the apn and come back it should be saved so next time if you click
the same setting it should show your saved settings if its not showing it then please
do the firmware thing i talked about.

If you don’t know how to do it please take it to someone who knows about it.

i can’t help much in this regard because its needs quite a complicated steps to do it.

You can install apps through finder

First you have to unzip the app on to your computer. It will have .app folder which you
have to put into the application folder.

Some apps don’t work because they need some other folders to be put on the iphone.

But most of the games and other stuff will work. Like all the procedures some apps will
not work it could either be because of your firmware or the incompatabilut of the app.

In iphone pc suite you can directly install apps by clicking on apps and downloading them from the internet from a special website and install them. That is how i am getting most of my apps now. They have even cracked the iphone apps so that you can use them without paying which is really cool. Because most of the apps i just try for fun. I wouldn’t pay for any of them because there is nothing that worth while out there.

u r doing a good job . i have a question hope u will help me out . i am form canda and will be coming to india for a month or two i will be in madhya pradeesh i have and unlocked iphone as u might know canda sucks for its mobile services.
so can u tell me which cell phone service provider i should use in MP so i can avtivate EDGE settigns easily on prepaid .

Since you will be india for only two months post paid option is out of the question.

So only prepaid.

Bsnl and airtel seem to work fine.

but the rates for gprs usuage are really high for the pre paid customers.

For example on

bsnl you will pay 20 Rs for every 1 mb you download.

i am not sure how airtel charges for prepaid customers. So expect to pay
big and stick to the above mentioned carriers and gprs should work fine.

i don’t think there is unlimited data plan for prepaid customers from both
the carriers.

settings for both the carriers are available in the comments section get it from
there when you choose the carrier.

i recently activated airtel online . but not getting E symbol . my firmware is 1.1.4. i need the airtel online gprs settings too . please give the details as soon as possible i am desperate to get gprs .

Only settings you need is the APN which is airtelgprs.com

Check with airtel if your gprs has been activated or not. Some times it takes time to get your account activated.

now i have the E symbol . but when i try the safari it gives EDGE connection not activated . but i have already activated airtel online which costs 5rs/day . i even got a message stating that airtel online has been activated. is there a seperate EDGE plan in airtel . thank u for the last reply.

I heard that airtel has two plans one is wap which is just mobile site another is gprs which is the real gprs. Find out if both are activated.

Also try and restart the iphone only then does the settings take effect in some cases so try that before you do anything. Then find out about the above mentioned issue.

just put

Access Point Name : bsnlsouth

and username and password is your mobile number.

i really recommend you to go post paid and get unlimited gprs account which is 200 Rs per month.

After changing these settings if it does not work just restart the iphone, some times that does the trick.

So i don’t know what more i can tell you.

Just curious did you get it to work before and has it stopped working now or
have you never got it to work on your iphone.
